Put simply, #GivingTuesday is a day to do good stuff for charity. The campaign launched in the UK in 2014 and has gone on to become one of Britain’s biggest days of charity. There are no set rules, people are simply encouraged to pick any charity they want and do something to support them. In 2017 giving Tuesday was celebrated on November 28th.
To mark the day, we offered people a chance to do double giving! For £3 people could donate a copy of Striker Boy to a children’s charity, £1.40 of which would then be donated to Mind.
The children’s charity we chose was Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, in North London.
Noah’s Ark already provide in-home care for around 150 children and are currently fundraising to build ‘The Ark’, which will be North London’s only inpatient children’s hospice.
Whilst the charity is still in need of funds to secure the Ark’s future, they reached a huge milestone on September 26th 2017 when they broke ground on the construction. The new hospice building will be 2,200 meters squared allowing onsite care for 450 children with expert end of life care, respite support, essential therapies and activities for the children and their families.
As a result of #GivingTuesday 40 copies of Striker Boy were donated to the hospice. Most of these will be given to children as gifts for birthdays and other celebrations, but a few copies will be sold in the charity’s shop to raise funds… meaning it’s actually triple giving!
Books offer us all a chance to be distracted, the opportunity to leave behind the stresses and strains of our lives and go on a great adventure. To dive to the bottom of the ocean, rocket through outer space, or in the case of Striker Boy, to walk out onto the pitch as a professional footballer.
Thank you to all of our generous #GivingTuesday donors, and to everyone who has supported the Striker Boy campaign.
Striker Boy is a brilliant read for children aged 8 to 14 and you can purchase your own copy for £6.99 here.
